Northern California Flute Camp is a one-week, intensive program designed to educate and inspire young flutists through an interesting and cultivating curriculum that examines many aspects of flute performance. Presented by Hidden Valley Music Seminars in beautiful Carmel Valley, NCFC offers a comprehensive camp experience by combining first-rate musical training with outdoor activities in the prime of California's physical surroundings.
Now entering its 23rd year, NCFC is an important pillar of the flute community and an integral part of the musical education of our students. NCFC provides young flutists not only with invaluable instruction in flute study, but with opportunities to develop meaningful friendships and immeasurable personal growth. Many NCFC students pursue careers in flute after attending our program; others use the learning tools they received as a means of keeping music incorporated permanently into their lives while they pursue other professions. NCFC students participate in a week of rehearsals, lessons and classes with an extremely accomplished faculty.
With a staff-to-student ratio of 1 to 6, students receive a great deal of individual attention throughout the week. Flute choirs including full instrumentation (C flute, piccolo, alto and bass flute*) afford students the opportunity to develop intonation, rhythm, and ensemble skills. Additionally, students participate in small chamber ensembles and in solo recital performances with piano accompaniment. Daily master classes and individual coaching appointments provide continual and concentrated input from faculty. Workshops focusing on a variety of musical topics, such as sight-reading, tone development, rhythm studies, controlling performance nerves, musical phrasing, and working with an accompanist are offered as electives. Flute choirs, small ensembles, and most academic activities are grouped according to level of advancement and experience. In addition to the daily curriculum, a well-known Guest Artist will give classes to students.
